WELCOME TO ALL ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ This is the home page and in this scrolling area you can learn lots about the Devon Rex and RexAreCats Cattery. Pricing, shipping and those things we want to know about prospective parents are discussed. If you want to be one of our prospective parents we'll want answers to the questions outlined below. Use the slider in the top right corner of this panel to scroll through all the data. A Little About Devon Rex Cats and our Cattery ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ RexAreCats is a cattery in operation for 11 years and located on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada since the summer of 2000. We are interested in the Devon Rex because it is friendly, bright and loyal. These kitties are curious and they are often 'talkers', they love to chat about the events of the day. Most times they greet us when we arrive home. Chirps, trills, half meows and meows are all in the vocabulary. Grunts, snorts, waddles and wiggles are part of the walk. A tail held aloft with a gentle swaying back and forth tells of a happy kitty. THE COAT: The Devon Rex coat is curly (also said to be 'Rexed') and is comprised of a downy undercoat only. Guard hairs are not common and thus there is little if any oil protecting the fur from moisture. Don't put a Devon out in the rain or kitty will get wet and cold. So, the Devon coat makes for an indoor cat BUT that very coat is less allergenic than a normal kitty coat making Devon Rex cats ideal for some folks with feline allergies. If you have feline allergy problems try snuggling with a Devon. You may find your first kitty housemate. PARENTS: We screen all prospective new parents. Before we sell anyone a kitten we want to know more about you. Our little guys take lots of time and energy and we don't want to send them anywhere where they might not be happy. So we ask all interested people to send a bit of a bio. Who you are, do you work, what about family? Do you have wee ones or pets? How would you plan to integrate a kitten with a toddler or dog? We can recommend some strategies if you are just not sure. Will the little guy have company during the day? It's not mandatory but it is nice to know. These guys must be indoor kitties and they may not be caged. Will that be a problem for you? Another detail of importance is that we do not allow our kittens to be declawed. So, this is just like a job interview for parenthood. The more forthcoming you are with this sort of information the more likely you are to have the opportunity to select a baby. Another new thing is that we want the full name and address as well as phone number of all potential parents. Its very difficult to track correspondance with 'foofoo@yahoo.com' or 'bugsy@hotmail.com'. We usually notice the informtion deficit at kitty placement time and this lack of information can mean another Mom or Dad gets to select before you. As a caution to you, and even if you think this is a little strange, we encourage you to be very suspect of any breeder willing to sell you a kitty if that breeder is not noticably cautious in this fashion. We would also like to know where you live and whether shipping by air would be needed. We need to know specifically what airport a kitty would be shipped to. We can sort out some of the shipping details with the airlines for you because we know how to ask the right questions. If there will be a problem shipping to your location we can find that out easily. The cost of shipping and a carrier for that purpose is passed on to the purchaser. Carriers are $30.00 to $50.00 Canadian. About Finding a 'Rexy' Little Friend ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ This web site tells you when kittens will be available. That date is the date when the kittens can leave home. We cannot tell with the very young kittens if they are pet or show quality. At about the age of 4 months we are able to figure it out so before that age they are just babies that will be available soon. As the "wanting homes" date approaches we will know who the pets are and who the moms and pops or show girls and boys will be. We recently created a wait list because many people were disappointed when they could not choose a kitten from a particular litter. The wait list is now being discontinuted (November 2003) and anyone on the list will be contacted and will have first shot at the upcoming litters. The wait list is being discontinued because its lots of work and over 70% of the wait listed folk turn down a kitten when they have the chance to pick. We will now use our 'old' system of selecting homes for kittens. It works like this: When you see kittens you like you send email answering all the questions in the home page scrolling panel. Answering these questions is mandatory. Thereafter, as you see kittens on the web site that interest you, you will send email indicating your interest. Email at the time a litter is first presented on the web followed by email near the leaving home date is the way to do it. So, its up to you to maintain contact and confirm your continuting interest. We still won't take deposits--they are just too hard to manage. PREFERENCES: Do you have color or gender preferences? Would you be interested in a retiree? Some folks find retirees attractive because they don't have to worry about kitten training. If you have gender or color preferences please consider your reasons especially if you are going to have the chance to visit. The best kitty for you is the one that falls in love with you as it makes for a very special relationship. PRICE: The cost of a pet quality kitten is less than the cost of a breeder or show cat. Prices are subject to change without notice. Of course there is a price difference for pet quality vs. breeding quality vs. show quality kittens. Pets are always cheaper but pet quality does not mean a second rate kitty. Pets are every bit as loving, good natured and friendly as any breeding or show quality cat. Its kind of like people. There's only one Marilyn Monroe and only one Brad Pitt. But guess what? The rest of us are great folks too! In the case of kitties the difference is not likely to be readily apparent to most prospective parents, it's judges in the show ring who really look at those details. BREEDERS: If you are looking for a Devon Rex as a breeding cat, we work with a small number of active catteries and we do not often sell a cat with breeding rights. Typically, breeding quality kittens are retained in our own breeding program. However, 1) if you are already an established breeder and 2) if you have a registered cattery with CFA, TICA or ACFA and 3) if you are involved with showing AND the Cat Fancy, you are welcome to contact us and we can discuss the possibilities. We may have what you need for your breeding program and you may have kitties of interest to us. At this time we have placed at least two breeding quality female kittens in pet homes because we just can't accommodate all of these lovely babies. NEXT STEPS: If you are local to us we welcome visitors. Visiting gives you the chance to meet the kitties and we get a chance to meet you. Let us know if you want to visit and we can set someting up. We encourage all prospective parents to send an email that answers most of the questions outlined above. WELCOME and thanks very much for visiting our web site. Use the links above to see our kitty family. We hope to hear from you soon. Click the 'eMail Us' button to send some email and we can answer specific questions.
